Now before we start it's very important to understand your range. There are some attacks that are better to do up close, like elbows and knees. Mid-range is going to be a little bit more arms, front punches and front kicks. A little further apart and now you could go on the same thing with the front kicks, but also round house kicks. I'm going to start first with close combos of very basic close combos that you could try to use all your tools, practice them. Our combo is going to be rear elbow, knee to elbow, rear knee, lean knee. I'm going to break this down slowly now. So first I'm going to start with my elbow, make sure my hand's tucked in, rear elbow. Knee to elbow, you're going to grab the bag real quick, knee, making sure I'm leaning back. Now here I need you guys to pay attention to my feet. I'm going to step straight down, then step back, and then use it. So it's almost as if I'm going to load it and then use it. Load and then use it. And then right back to my stance. So elbow, elbow, knee, down, knee and back to my stance. So right back to your stance. And right back to your stance. Mid-range, something we could practice. Now it's one-two, one-two, right from here you're going to lean back, push kick, catch it with knee. Rear front kick is a little bit more offensive. You're looking more to push the bag. You push them away, then you catch them. So one-two, one-two, up push, catch, right back to your stance. One-two, one-two, push, catch and right back to your stance. Now a little further away. Obviously from this distance, elbows and knees, they're not going to work. So now I'm going to go with a long range attack. Long front kick, right from there. I'm going to step forward, fall into it and go right into a round house kick. So front kick, and down, okay? Now we could do this on both sides, okay? Stay here on my left leg, come up, push kick. Fall right into my stance, round house kick. Here push, right back to my stance. Knee push, back to my stance. Rear push, fall forward, back to my stance. Knee push and rear push. And those are some good kick boxing combos for you to try.

Now I'm going to go over defense for kick boxing punches. Okay, face me. First we're going to start with out blocking, all right? Very basic, when you block a punch simply you're going to have to keep your knuckles together close, fingers are going to tight and your thumb's going to be pressed against your forehead. So Melissa over here's going to throw a few punches toward my face. Very happily, she will. And I'm going to block just basic straight punches coming towards me. Ready and one-two. Every time this happens I'm staying tight, nice and relaxed, one-two. Okay, keeping my chin down, making sure I can see everything, one-two. Not panicking, breathing out, staying relaxed. Okay, now against a hook, a punch that's coming to the side, this is going to be a little bit more of a shoulder girdle coming up, okay? So now do a one-two and then a hook. Go, one-two and sliding up. I'm sliding this up. I am not taking my elbow upwards. I'm taking my shoulder girdle straight up. If I do this eventually later on, she would come up hook here or kick over here. I do not want that, okay? One more time, one-two hook. And again, good. Got to bring my shoulder up to block those. Now we're going to go over to more basic defense. So this is going to be called a slip back. So do a jab nice and slow, I'm going to be slipping back. Now some people like to drop their hand. I personally-- a punch-- I like to keep my hand up. Now with the slip back, it's fairly simple. I'm bringing all my weight to my rear leg. I'm turning my shoulder in just a little bit and lift them up, just in case he steps in, all right? It's not landing. Okay, let me keep my hand up or my shoulder, depends what you feel more comfortable with, but the main thing here is I'm leaning back. I'm turning in towards my leg a little bit and later on I could come back with a good strong punch. So nice and easy, go. Go and jab. Good, do a two as well. Good again, one-two. And again, one-two. Okay, all right? Now guys, you're going to move on to something that's called parrying. Hands up, so she's going to slowly throw a jab. Slow, stay right here. Parrying's pretty much a slap. All I'm really doing is just slapping her hand towards her body. I'm not doing this, I'm not opening her up. So now her momentum with her right hand is coming through, no. I'm closing her off, okay? Throw the right hand, closing her off. Now at the same time-- extend your left again-- I'm moving my head away from the punch. You don't want to parry and move your head towards the punch. It doesn't make any sense, okay? Nice and easy throw a one-two. Again and again. Okay, so it's very short. We're not dropping hands. We're not exaggerating. We're not reaching. Letting the hand come close to you and letting them move forward and then later on you're taking advantage of it. So real small across the face, move your head away. Real small across the face, move your head away, and right back to your stance or continue on punching. And that's how you defend against kick boxing punches.

We're just going to use a chair. All right? We're assuming you have no bags at home. No dumbbells, so hopefully you have a chair at home. We're going to start off with some upper body motions. Very simple, you're going to sit down, put your hands right on the edge, elbows stay in the whole time. In and all the way down. Breathe in and out, 5-4-3-2 and 1. Right away you're going to sit down right from here. We're going to go nonstop. It's going to be a circuit, okay? Lean back just a little bit, but not resting on the back. Just going to lean back just a bit. Hands behind your head, [unintelligible 00:41] right here and crunch. Work from there guys. What's going to happen now, first we're going to stretch out our hip flexors. We're going to lunge into the chair. Make sure the chair is secure when you do so. You're going to step in, stretch everything out. Stretch is just a modified lunge and come right back. Step in. This is going to help us with our front kicks and our knees. Now we're going to make this just a little harder by reversing it. We're going to put our foot on the chair now, right here. Looking forward. Everything straight. Hips are straight. Toes are straight. We're going to go straight down. Breathing in. Breathing out and then you're going to switch. Now this last exercise is going to be a little harder. You want to make sure your chair is nice and secure. This is going to help us develop power with our knees and our front kicks. So our foot is going to be in the chair. You're going to come up nice and slow to make sure everything is secure, and once you're there, make sure you don't lose your balance and come right back down. Now and up, and then you switch, and that's some kickboxing drills for the home.

Before I start, I want to explain rhythm. There a few different timings. Some people will be more in a boxing forward/back timing, on their toes. Others will be more having their weight back. It's up to you which one feels more comfortable. Obviously it's very important in kick boxing that you're able to lift your front leg up at any time. So it's up to you whether you want to be more mobile or a little bit more with your weight on your back leg. It's a preference. Now in regards to the footwork, for every basic rule in regards to moving in the ring, anywhere in kickboxing, is that the leg closest to the direction your moving towards goes first. So if I'm moving forward, the leg closest to forward moves first. If I'm going this way, this one moves two inches then the back one moves two inches. If I'm going back, the leg closest to back moves first. Moves back three inches, moves back three inches. Going left three, three, two, two, one, one. Doesn't matter, I'm always leading with the leg closest to that direction first. Now obviously we don't move so robotic so I'm gonna stay in my rhythm and I'm gonna go forward. Boom. Boom. It's almost like a little shuffle. Making sure my feet come close. Never want to get hit in this position. I want to make sure I have a good, strong, athletic stance to hold term. Going back. Forward. Here. Now, obviously there is a lot of circling that's going on in kick boxing so that being said, you always want to make sure you are always in your proper stance and in front of your opponent. If your opponent is moving to the side, very simply all you have to do is pivot off your lead leg. Turn the other way, pivot off your lead leg. You can also shuffle. Shuffle around. Shuffle, make sure you maintain your stance. Shuffle the other direction. But you do not want your opponent be here, or here. You ideally want to be there on your opponent but not let them do that. So once again, he's in front of you. I'm shuffling. Making sure I have a good stance the whole time. Never letting him get to my sides. Obviously you know to have your hands like this. You will have your hands up, elbows in, the whole time. Shuffling. Stay in your rhythm if you're not moving anything or tap forward, tap here, turn, turn, shuffle, turn, to the side, to the side. But making sure you maintain a good, solid, base the whole time. And that's some proper techniques for footwork in kickboxing.

There is a difference between rear leg and lead leg in regards to front kicks. Lead leg is a little bit more defensive. Rear leg is a little bit more offensive. Lead leg, it's more about stopping somebody in their path. I'm going to stop them from coming in towards me. Rear leg is a little bit more about getting somebody away from me. First things first. You want to make sure you're not jamming your toes. It's very important that as soon as your leg comes up, your knee comes up, that your toes are pointing straight up. You do not want to jam your toes. It's going to be a very bad day. In regards to the foot, you can be on the balls of your feet, be flat-footed or it can be with your heel. Heels is going to hurt a little bit more and a little less range of motion. Next thing up, you want to be as tall as you possibly can. Bring your knee into your chest, knee to your chest first, not leg out. Knee to your chest. Then, right from here, we're pumping our arm, whichever kick we're using, we're pumping our arm and leaning back as the hip goes forward. So, lead kick. Stop it. Coming at me. Knee up. Coming right back and right back. Now rear leg, like I said, is a little bit more powerful because it's coming from the back. It has more time to travel forward. Rear leg is the same deal. You just want to make sure, you always come back to your stance. You don't want to do this. You don't want to come up, kick, and fall forward. Here, my knee is going to go straight up to my chest. Come right back to my stance. Lean back, toss my hips forward, squeeze my glutes. Come right back to my stance. Depending on where you kick, you can drop both hands if you go high enough. If you're not going too high, one hand. If you're going a little higher, come all the way up. It's very important, guys, with your rear leg is that you do not fall forward. You're going to step into your opponent's range or paunch or whatever, and then make sure you come up, kick, and come right back to your stance. Your lead leg up, kick, slowly come right back to your stance. Come right back to your stance. Come right back to your stance. Come right back to your stance. Come right back to your stance. Make sure one hand stays up, unless you're going pretty high, then you can drop both hands. For the most part, one hand always is staying right up, pumping the same arm from the same leg. That's how you do a front kick.

Now we're doing kick boxing footwork drills. We're going to use an agility ladder to do so. Our first exercise is going to be high knees going down the ladder. While I'm going down, each foot is going to land on each box only once and I'm never crossing my feet. So and slow it's going to look like this; one, two; one, two; one, two; one, two; one, two, okay? Going right back; one, two; one, two; one, two; one, two; one, two. Now are you're getting more advanced, go a little faster. So one, two; one, two; one, two; one, two; one, two. Now to add just a little bit more flavor to making it more kick boxing-ish, just to help you promote your jabs and everything, you're going to do it with your hands on your chin and punch at the same time. Now we're going to move on to the Ali shuffle. This next drill is going to help you with your switching in kick boxing. So I'm going to start off like this. One foot's going to start up on the box and then what's going to happen, you're going to keep switching your feet and your hands, the opposite hand is going to be right in front. So it's going to look like this. In place, now we're going to move down the ladder and whichever leg is closest to the direction you're moving in is going to be the one leading the way. So from here, then we're switching, we start going a little faster. Now a little bit more advanced. Hands up, we're punching. Next exercise is going to be to build leg endurance for your kick boxing. So I'm going to start off squatted on the outside part of the ladder, all right? And then jump into the box with both feet, standing. All right, so every time you do this drill, make sure when you're in the squatted position your arms are up, so you can keep your chest upright. And let's do it again. Chest is up, arms are out, you're squatted. And those are some kick boxing footwork drills.

Now I'm going to do some kick boxing sparring drills. We're going to keep it basic, then do some combinations at the end. Face me one second, all right. So first we're going to start off just to get warmed up with some basic punch defense, so nice and easy. Melissa's going to do one-two, one-two towards me. Always keeping your hands nice and tight and relaxed, okay? And I'm going to do a one-two, one-two towards her. One-two, one-two, there you go. Okay, now we're going to move on the rear round house kick. So I'm going to do a rear roundhouse kick and Melissa's going to block it, so hands up, nice and easy, good. And then now she's going to throw a rear round house kick. Good, and then we're going to go back and forth. So it's going to look like this, hands up. Good, and more, good. During this drill it's very important, guys that you wear shin guards, just because shin to shin can really hurt or if you hit their knee it could really hurt. Next thing I want to do is front kick defense. So I'm going to throw my left front kick and Melissa's going to swipe it across. Good, now you go. Good, and then I go. Good, nice and smooth, and then you go. And then I go one more time, swipe across, and you go. Good. Now we're going to start combining these blocks. Hands up, so now nice and easy and I'm going do one-two, one-two, rear round house, block, block, block, block, and good. One more time one-two, one-two, and then I go and so now we're going to go back and forth. Ready, go. Good, okay. Now I'm going to go over to the front kick and then you're going to take advantage of it by doing a round house kick yourself. So you're going to block it, good. Swipe it, switch, and kick. Good, and I'm going to go. So front kick, swipe it across, I'm going to switch my stance and round house. So let's do this back and forth. Nice and easy, swipe, good, switch good. Good, you go, switch, good. I go, and good, you go, switch, and right back. And guys that's just some basic sparring drills that you could try out with a partner. Make sure you guys are nice and light with it, okay?

The hook, complicated punch; it's a natural punch, but we tend to go real open with it. You got to try your best to go from point A to point B as much as you can, meaning this. This is how most people would naturally try to do a hook. Go right from their face, hopefully, drop down behind them and come up. This is very easy to counter, all you've got to do is throw a punch right down the middle, you stop the punch. A hook in kickboxing, what you want to do is try to go right from your chin, turn just a little bit, take your hand straight toward the opponent, and curve in. So it's a little bit more of a right angle type of movement. So same thing, lead hand, coming out and turning right in. So once again, turn, come out, turn in, right from point A to point B, out turn in. So it should look like this in the back. Here, not going too far out, going right from point A to point B, turning in. In regards to the legs, what you're going to do is pivot the front foot inwards so as my hand is coming through my weight forward and now I'm transferring my weight back. I'm pivoting my weight back so I can help my shoulder come back with the hand. So same thing from this angle. Here I'm turning as my fist is going through, I'm turning bringing my weight back, putting my lead leg almost pointing forward, still keeping my chin towards my opponent, opposite hand stays up the whole time, and come right back to your stance. Turn, back to your stance. Turn, right back to your stance. Here, turn, turn right back in, turning out, and turn right back in. Okay, and that's how you do a hook in kickboxing.

Now we're going to do some kickboxing drills for beginners. First thing that I want you to do is to get in your fighting stance. Left foot in front and we're just going to start with some basic punching. But at the same time, we're going to step in place, just to be a little bit mobile. It's going to look like this, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two. Keep it up. Making sure you're turning your fist the whole time. Turn, turn, turn and right from there, what's going to happen now, so we can build some endurance and flexibility little by little, put your hands behind your head. And you're going to now with your knees pointing out, toes out, deep squat. We're trying to stretch out and warm up, little by little. The next exercise is going to be more for our core, to get used to our knees. Basically, you're going to stand with your feet together. You're going to bring your knee up and touch your knee with the opposite elbow. All right, next one up. You're going to lunge back and kick up and switch. Lunge back and kick up. You're going to do it one more time, back to back. And those are some basic kickboxing drills.

We're going to start off with our dumbbells. Our first exercise is going to be a bicep curl with a shoulder press. It's going to look like this. Curl, press. The first thing I want to say about the bicep curl is to make sure your elbow is in front of your hip the whole time. So I'm curling. I'm not doing this. I'm not coming forward. It's not going behind me as I'm going down, okay? So I'm going to curl and press up. So I'm breathing in, breathe out. Down, down. From here we're going to move on to the back of the arm, bring your tricep kick backs. You're going to bend over, work on your lower back, arch your back and stick out your chest the whole time. Elbow is going to be up the whole time. You're not changing this position, you're not losing your core, your posture. You're staying up maintaining this posture. Now take a deep breath in and extend your hands back and hold. That's one. Breathe in, squeeze those biceps, breathe in and one more time breathe in. Both of these exercises are going to help you punch longer, punch stronger. The shoulder press is going to help you work on your technique in regards to turning your hands over. Bicep curl, obviously you want to have strong biceps and triceps and make sure they don't fade, on you as you kick box. Next thing we're going to go over to the lower body. For that we're going to use our kettle bell. Our first exercise is going to be squats. Obviously, you need a good lower body in kickboxing. We're going to hold on to our kettle bell. Our feet are going to be slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Our weight is going to stay on our heel. Notice how my toes could come up off the floor. I'm going to stick out my chest, lower back stays arched the whole time. Good posture. and I'm going to drop my butt straight down. Breathing in and breathe out. Breathe in, breathe out. Now our goal is to try to do as many as we possible can. A few sets, three to four just to build some kind of endurance. Next exercise we're going to do with the kettle bell is kettle bell swings, okay? This is going to be a little bit more in the posterior chain. So here the first thing I'm going to do, I'm going to put my feet just a little closer and I'm going to drop my chest, but making sure this is still arched. I do not want to see this, okay? This has to stay arched. Most of my bending is coming from the hips. So I'm taking my hips back and then squeezing my glutes forward, so I'm propelling this kettle bell forward using my hips. So it's going to look like this. Down. If you compare this movement to our kickboxing drills, it's very similar to our knees and our front kicks, so really useful for kickboxing. Next tool we're going to use is our TRX, right here. We're going to do some chest and back, to help us push our punches out, pull our punches back in. So the first one is going to be the push. I'm going to get here in the pushing position. My body stays straight the whole time. I'm not collapsing. When I come up it's not just my chest. Everything's going down together, breathing in. Everything comes up together. I'm staying on my toes the whole time. It's a straight line from my heel to the top of my head. Straight down, breath out. Breath in, breath out. So this is to help us with our punches, obviously making us stronger from the chest. Now we're going to flip over. Body is completely straight leaning on the TRX, all the way back. Straight line from my heel to the top of my head, then right from here staying where we turn our fist like a punch, we're going to turn right back as we pull back. My trapz are staying down the whole time. Good posture. Over and down. Breathe out, breathe in, breathe out. Always giving me a quick little pause. Breathe in and hold, breathe in, breathe out. And those are some strength training exercises for kickboxing.

Now I'm going to go over some equipment you need for sparring and kickboxing. First thing, being obvious is your hand wraps. Don't want to hurt our hands. Want to make sure there's as much cushion and more importantly, you don't want to hurt your partner, so you want to try to make sure there's as much cushion as possible in your hands. Next thing up is the style of gloves you will be using. Unlike the hook and loop, this is now laces. These laces are designed, so once you put your hands in and you tie them up, you lace them up, they're not going to scratch your partner in their face. Very important stuff, right here. Next piece of equipment that's really important is mouthpiece. Obviously, you don't want to come out with no teeth, your front tooth missing, so a mouth piece is extremely important. You've got to make sure that it's well fitted, that it locks in and it's not pulling around. If it's too big, that's really dangerous itself because it might leave your jaw open, and if you get hit, you're going to have a really bad day. Next one up, head gear. Obviously, getting punched and kicked in the head is not fun. This doesn't necessarily make it any more fun, but it helps a little bit. Make sure with your head gear it's well fitted It doesn't slide around your face too much and that the bottom strap is not choking you underneath. And one of the last pieces that's really important so you and your sparring partner could stay friends is the shin guards. Shin guards are going to protect this bony part of your shin. Attacking them, hurting them too hard, so now you guys can continue on with your sparring training safely. All right, guys? Those are just some basic equipment needs for sparring and kickboxing.

Now we're doing kick boxing partner pad training. So first we're going to start off obviously we need a pair of pads, muay Thai pads, they're a little longer than regular boxing pads. It's going to be very helpful for the kicks, okay? Face me, but first we're going to start out with our punches, okay? Nice and easy, hands up. Usually when doing pads you want to make sure that the person you're training with is punching across. So one across your face, not towards, one. You don't want this just in case they turn into your face. So nice and easy, one-two, across. One-two, good, and one-two. One-two, one-two, and one-two, one-two. This is a good time to work on your defense, making sure you're staying relaxed, having punches come to your face and not freaking out, one-two, one-two. So I'm staying in the strong stance. I'm staying there, one-two, one-two. And one more time one-two, one-two. Good, staying nice and calm. Now we're going to go with a hook, nice and easy, one-two, and I'm going to turn my pad. So now she can hook nice and easy, okay? One-two, hook, go. One-two, hook. And again, go one-two hook. And one more one-two, hook. Notice I'm still turning my body almost as if I'm doing a one-two hook myself, just not extending my arms any more. All right, nice and easy, we're going to do uppercuts. Obviously, if she's going to do an uppercut, my pad needs to be pointing down. So let me get a one-two uppercut, uppercut. Go one-two, uppercut, uppercut. Good, nice and tall, go. And one-two, uppercut, uppercut. And one more time, go. One-two uppercut, uppercut. Eventually now you start playing with these combos, right? Double jab, double jab two, one-two, hook two, one-two up-up hook. Okay, and that's with the punches. Now we'll just move on towards our elbows. Nice and easy, let me get a right elbow, good. Now with the elbow guys it's very important that you definitely keep your face away, because you can get away with one or two punches by mistake, not elbows, okay? So now we're going to combine the elbows with the punches, double jab, right elbow. Go, jab-jab, good. And again, jab-jab, good. And one more jab-jab, good. Now double jab, right elbow, left elbow. Go jab-jab, elbow, elbow, good. And again jab-jab, elbow, elbow. And again, jab-jab, elbow, elbow, good. Let's give Melissa a little breather all right? Now we're going to move on to the front kick. Okay, so with the front kick we're going to take this pad, you're going to flip your hand over real quick and just put this pad right in your belly and put this pad right in front. So nice and easy, hands up. It's going to look like this. Stand in a strong stance and left front kick. Good, and again, left front. Good, and left front. I usually prefer to train my abs. Hands up, nice and easy, left front kick. Good, left front kick. Good, and left front kick. It's good ab training. All right if you don't have abs, probably use the pad first, okay? And front kick, good, and front kick. Now let's combine it in our combo. One-two, left front kick, go. One-two, good, again. One-two and good. Now one-two right front kick. Go one-two, and good. Go, one-two and good. And one more one-two and good. All right, so now we're going to move on to the knees. Knees up, so with the knee this one really cannot get hit with a knee. You're going to have your pad pointing towards the knee, same side usually. Have the other pad right on top of it, okay? So now this knee never comes up or you never hit yourself with your hand in your face, okay? So nice and easy, right knee. Good, as a guy, I'm always going to be standing at this angle. Never give an opportunity to come right up the middle. Ready, and knee, good. And knee, good. Nice and easy, one-two, right knee. One-two, and good. And again one-two, and good. And one more, one-two and nice. Okay, now we're going to go on to the left knee. So nice and easy, come and stay in your normal stance first. Switch, good and knee, good. Right back to normal, switch, and knee, good. One more time, switch, and knee, good. One-two, switch knee, go. One-two switch, nice. And again, one-two, switch, good. And one more, one-two, switch, all right.

Now we're going to go over shadow boxing techniques for kick boxing. First thing when you start shadow boxing, obviously is to get in your stance, okay? From here in whatever rhythm you feel comfortable with and then you start moving. First practice your moving before you do any strikes. Here and here if you're a south paw. Move, you stand, go forward, back, side making sure you're always looking towards the direction your stance is at. I'm looking. I'm looking. Staying here. Staying here. This is my opponent and so my head comes with me. Once you're feeling comfortable with your movement, now we can start with our upper body attacks. So you do your punches, jab, cross, start doing combinations, move, more combinations. Now from here I continue on with the elbows. Start mixing up punches with elbows. Just keep moving. Then little by little start incorporating your defense. Now once you're feeling nice and warm, start using the legs a little bit. Here and maybe start off with a knee. Start adding that with your combos, with the upper body combos. Switch, maybe walk down the line. Knee, knee, knee, knee, turn, turn, all right? Feeling a little looser. Hamstrings are feeling looser we start with the front kicks. Kick, kick, kick, kick, turn and kick, kick, kick, kick, turn, start mixing elbows for our combos. All right, now we're feeling even more looser we start adding our round house kick. We start off slow, not so high. And switch, as you start getting warmer, go a little higher. Now I'll start adding in my combos. So basically, as you keep getting warmed up, you start adding more attacks, defense, knees, front kicks, round kicks. And those are some of the basic shadow boxing drills in kick boxing.

In order to do a back kick, the first thing you need to do, obviously, is to make sure your back is facing your opponent. First, what I want to do, with my lead leg, is obviously turn it around, my back is facing my opponent, now next thing with my leg is to bring this knee to my chest. Okay, right from there, I'm going to pick up my opponent, by turning my face towards them, making sure I can see them properly. And then from here, I'm going to extend, squeeze my glutes, extend my leg back, all the way back, kick, and then right back to my stance. I'm going to be here, step, turn, knee comes up, extend, pick them up, and right back to my stance. So. You can also do a back kick right after a missed attack. So, I'm here, you miss them, I want to make sure that they're not coming too close to me, I'm going to pick them up, and right away extend my leg back. So, both ways, either you can initiate the kick by turning, giving your back, and kick, or it can be right after a missed attack, boom, and kick. So, look, something like this. Here, step, turn, pick up my opponent, knee comes to my chest, right back to my stance. In a missed attack, I kick, I miss, right from here, I bring my knee up, right back. So, it should look something like this. Turn, pick him up, right back to my stance. Or, kick, you miss, as you're coming forwards, make sure they don't get too close, attack. Keep them away from you. And, that's how you do a proper back kick in kickboxing.
