Very basic, when you block a punch simply you're going to have to keep your knuckles together close, fingers are going to tight and your thumb's going to be pressed against your forehead. So Melissa over here's going to throw a few punches toward my face. Very happily, she will. And I'm going to block just basic straight punches coming towards me. Ready and one-two. Every time this happens I'm staying tight, nice and relaxed, one-two. Okay, keeping my chin down, making sure I can see everything, one-two. Not panicking, breathing out, staying relaxed. Okay, now against a hook, a punch that's coming to the side, this is going to be a little bit more of a shoulder girdle coming up, okay? So now do a one-two and then a hook. Go, one-two and sliding up. I'm sliding this up. I am not taking my elbow upwards. I'm taking my shoulder girdle straight up. If I do this eventually later on, she would come up hook here or kick over here. I do not want that, okay? One more time, one-two hook. And again, good. Got to bring my shoulder up to block those. Now we're going to go over to more basic defense. So this is going to be called a slip back. So do a jab nice and slow, I'm going to be slipping back. Now some people like to drop their hand. I personally-- a punch-- I like to keep my hand up. Now with the slip back, it's fairly simple. I'm bringing all my weight to my rear leg. I'm turning my shoulder in just a little bit and lift them up, just in case he steps in, all right? It's not landing. Okay, let me keep my hand up or my shoulder, depends what you feel more comfortable with, but the main thing here is I'm leaning back. I'm turning in towards my leg a little bit and later on I could come back with a good strong punch. So nice and easy, go. Go and jab. Good, do a two as well. Good again, one-two. And again, one-two. Okay, all right? Now guys, you're going to move on to something that's called parrying. Hands up, so she's going to slowly throw a jab. Slow, stay right here. Parrying's pretty much a slap. All I'm really doing is just slapping her hand towards her body. I'm not doing this, I'm not opening her up. So now her momentum with her right hand is coming through, no. I'm closing her off, okay? Throw the right hand, closing her off. Now at the same time-- extend your left again-- I'm moving my head away from the punch. You don't want to parry and move your head towards the punch. It doesn't make any sense, okay? Nice and easy throw a one-two. Again and again. Okay, so it's very short. We're not dropping hands. We're not exaggerating. We're not reaching. Letting the hand come close to you and letting them move forward and then later on you're taking advantage of it. So real small across the face, move your head away. Real small across the face, move your head away, and right back to your stance or continue on punching. And that's how you defend against kick boxing punches.

We're just going to use a chair. All right? We're assuming you have no bags at home. No dumbbells, so hopefully you have a chair at home. We're going to start off with some upper body motions. Very simple, you're going to sit down, put your hands right on the edge, elbows stay in the whole time. In and all the way down. Breathe in and out, 5-4-3-2 and 1. Right away you're going to sit down right from here. We're going to go nonstop. It's going to be a circuit, okay? Lean back just a little bit, but not resting on the back. Just going to lean back just a bit. Hands behind your head, [unintelligible 00:41] right here and crunch. Work from there guys. What's going to happen now, first we're going to stretch out our hip flexors. We're going to lunge into the chair. Make sure the chair is secure when you do so. You're going to step in, stretch everything out. Stretch is just a modified lunge and come right back. Step in. This is going to help us with our front kicks and our knees. Now we're going to make this just a little harder by reversing it. We're going to put our foot on the chair now, right here. Looking forward. Everything straight. Hips are straight. Toes are straight. We're going to go straight down. Breathing in. Breathing out and then you're going to switch. Now this last exercise is going to be a little harder. You want to make sure your chair is nice and secure. This is going to help us develop power with our knees and our front kicks. So our foot is going to be in the chair. You're going to come up nice and slow to make sure everything is secure, and once you're there, make sure you don't lose your balance and come right back down. Now and up, and then you switch, and that's some kickboxing drills for the home.

Before I start, I want to explain rhythm. There a few different timings. Some people will be more in a boxing forward/back timing, on their toes. Others will be more having their weight back. It's up to you which one feels more comfortable. Obviously it's very important in kick boxing that you're able to lift your front leg up at any time. So it's up to you whether you want to be more mobile or a little bit more with your weight on your back leg. It's a preference. Now in regards to the footwork, for every basic rule in regards to moving in the ring, anywhere in kickboxing, is that the leg closest to the direction your moving towards goes first. So if I'm moving forward, the leg closest to forward moves first. If I'm going this way, this one moves two inches then the back one moves two inches. If I'm going back, the leg closest to back moves first. Moves back three inches, moves back three inches. Going left three, three, two, two, one, one. Doesn't matter, I'm always leading with the leg closest to that direction first. Now obviously we don't move so robotic so I'm gonna stay in my rhythm and I'm gonna go forward. Boom. Boom. It's almost like a little shuffle. Making sure my feet come close. Never want to get hit in this position. I want to make sure I have a good, strong, athletic stance to hold term. Going back. Forward. Here. Now, obviously there is a lot of circling that's going on in kick boxing so that being said, you always want to make sure you are always in your proper stance and in front of your opponent. If your opponent is moving to the side, very simply all you have to do is pivot off your lead leg. Turn the other way, pivot off your lead leg. You can also shuffle. Shuffle around. Shuffle, make sure you maintain your stance. Shuffle the other direction. But you do not want your opponent be here, or here. You ideally want to be there on your opponent but not let them do that. So once again, he's in front of you. I'm shuffling. Making sure I have a good stance the whole time. Never letting him get to my sides. Obviously you know to have your hands like this. You will have your hands up, elbows in, the whole time. Shuffling. Stay in your rhythm if you're not moving anything or tap forward, tap here, turn, turn, shuffle, turn, to the side, to the side. But making sure you maintain a good, solid, base the whole time. And that's some proper techniques for footwork in kickboxing.

The hook, complicated punch; it's a natural punch, but we tend to go real open with it. You got to try your best to go from point A to point B as much as you can, meaning this. This is how most people would naturally try to do a hook. Go right from their face, hopefully, drop down behind them and come up. This is very easy to counter, all you've got to do is throw a punch right down the middle, you stop the punch. A hook in kickboxing, what you want to do is try to go right from your chin, turn just a little bit, take your hand straight toward the opponent, and curve in. So it's a little bit more of a right angle type of movement. So same thing, lead hand, coming out and turning right in. So once again, turn, come out, turn in, right from point A to point B, out turn in. So it should look like this in the back. Here, not going too far out, going right from point A to point B, turning in. In regards to the legs, what you're going to do is pivot the front foot inwards so as my hand is coming through my weight forward and now I'm transferring my weight back. I'm pivoting my weight back so I can help my shoulder come back with the hand. So same thing from this angle. Here I'm turning as my fist is going through, I'm turning bringing my weight back, putting my lead leg almost pointing forward, still keeping my chin towards my opponent, opposite hand stays up the whole time, and come right back to your stance. Turn, back to your stance. Turn, right back to your stance. Here, turn, turn right back in, turning out, and turn right back in. Okay, and that's how you do a hook in kickboxing.

In order to do a back kick, the first thing you need to do, obviously, is to make sure your back is facing your opponent. First, what I want to do, with my lead leg, is obviously turn it around, my back is facing my opponent, now next thing with my leg is to bring this knee to my chest. Okay, right from there, I'm going to pick up my opponent, by turning my face towards them, making sure I can see them properly. And then from here, I'm going to extend, squeeze my glutes, extend my leg back, all the way back, kick, and then right back to my stance. I'm going to be here, step, turn, knee comes up, extend, pick them up, and right back to my stance. So. You can also do a back kick right after a missed attack. So, I'm here, you miss them, I want to make sure that they're not coming too close to me, I'm going to pick them up, and right away extend my leg back. So, both ways, either you can initiate the kick by turning, giving your back, and kick, or it can be right after a missed attack, boom, and kick. So, look, something like this. Here, step, turn, pick up my opponent, knee comes to my chest, right back to my stance. In a missed attack, I kick, I miss, right from here, I bring my knee up, right back. So, it should look something like this. Turn, pick him up, right back to my stance. Or, kick, you miss, as you're coming forwards, make sure they don't get too close, attack. Keep them away from you. And, that's how you do a proper back kick in kickboxing.

Now we're going to do some kickboxing fitness drills. These drills are going to be designed to build overall body I guess endurance, power, and coordination, that kind of stuff. At first we're going to start off with a modified Burpee. We're just not going to go all the way down with the push up, so it's going to start off like this. I'm going to go straight down to the floor, right from here, and I'm going to jump my feet back. From this position, I'm going to come right back in, and then from here I'm going to jump straight up. So it will look like this. Okay, all right. Next drill is going to be for our core. So I'm going to lie down completely. Legs are going to be straight. Arms are going to be straight. I'm going to stay here the whole time. I'm not going to touch the floor. Take a deep breath in and you want to make sure you're engaging the core the whole time. On the way up and on the way down, never letting it go. So from here, the next exercise we're going to do is going to be for our upper body, but we're going to add a little bit of back flair to it. So bring our hands back to our face when we punch. It's going to look like this. Go straight down. Breathe in and breathe out. Come up and up. We squeeze our back every single time, so eventually you're going to go back and forth and switch hands, whichever one comes first, right? Down, opposite hand first. Next time, other hand first, and those are some fitness kickboxing drills.

First off, the jab as you remember is always with the lead hand and stepping forward. Now the cross itself it's more of a stationary punch. Starts all the way at the rear leg, all right, you're turning, your pivoting, pivoting, pivoting, pivoting the knee, pivot the hip, pivoting the shoulder towards your opponent. Then it's the hand at the last second. Make sure the opposite hand stays up the whole time and we turn right back. So jab, you're stepping, boom boom, three inches, three inches, two inches, two inches whatever it is. You stay there turn pivot, pivot, pivot turn the hip, turn the shoulder, flip the fist over and come right back. So with the jab cross it should look something like this. Step, turn, okay? The first one is mobile, the second one is stationary. Now, unlike boxing, in kickboxing we're staying a little bit more back. In boxing you would transfer your weight completely, big stance, and later on you'd be weaving and stuff like that. In kick boxing however we have kicks. This one you have to be a little bit more upright and extend your arms, all right? We don't have the luxury of being low and having a solid stance because at any given time you know we have to move away from a kick, whatever, okay? So once again jab cross. One more time, I'm going to step and then turn in place. And that's how you do a jab cross in kickboxing.

Now we're going to do some kickboxing drills for beginners. First thing that I want you to do is to get in your fighting stance. Left foot in front and we're just going to start with some basic punching. But at the same time, we're going to step in place, just to be a little bit mobile. It's going to look like this, one, two, one, two, one, two, one, two. Keep it up. Making sure you're turning your fist the whole time. Turn, turn, turn and right from there, what's going to happen now, so we can build some endurance and flexibility little by little, put your hands behind your head. And you're going to now with your knees pointing out, toes out, deep squat. We're trying to stretch out and warm up, little by little. The next exercise is going to be more for our core, to get used to our knees. Basically, you're going to stand with your feet together. You're going to bring your knee up and touch your knee with the opposite elbow. All right, next one up. You're going to lunge back and kick up and switch. Lunge back and kick up. This is a very strong move. It requires you to obviously have just a little bit of balance because your feet will be crossed for a quick second. But if done correctly, it's a very powerful move, really going to be glut-dominant. All your weight is going to be going forward and you could really cause some damage. Okay? So first thing first, from your stance, what's going to happen now, I'm going to transfer all my weight towards my opponent. So I want you to pay attention to my rear leg because I'm standing in my stance. I'm stepping across, okay? Stepping across. Now, even though it's called a side kick, it's almost going to be as if I'm giving my back towards my opponent for a quick second. Okay? So, here, up. He's going to come up. I'm giving my back towards my opponent. Now, the point of contact with the foot itself, you want it to be flipped up. Okay? Flip up over here so it's almost with the outside part of the foot that I'm making contact. Starting right from here, I step. Knee comes up, I'm flipping everything almost giving my back, then extending my leg through, but in one smooth motion. So, lift my hands up here. Step, and right back to my stance. So as soon as I'm done, I want you guys to pay attention that I kick, boom, down, back. Come up, kick, down, back. Kick, down, back. So once again, from here. Kick, down, back. So, live action. Here, stepping through, back, facing my opponent. Step, down, back. One more time, going through. Kick, down, back. Okay? That's how you do a proper shuffle side kick in kickboxing.
